Lake expand LM Series with launch of LM 44 Digital Audio System Processor

Lake Processing introduces a brand new standalone system processor, the LM 44 - being unveiled at the PLASA show in London.
The LM 44 is a powerful, full-featured digital audio processor based on the highly acclaimed Lake Processing technology, which builds on the run-away success of the LM 26, and marking another major step for the Lake brand under the stewardship of Sweden's Lab.gruppen.
Identical in many respects to the LM 26 Digital Audio Loudspeaker Processor, the LM 44 is distinguished primarily by a different input/output configuration. The LM 44 provides four analog input and four analog outputs, in contrast to the LM 26's 2-in/6-out. In addition, the LM 44 accommodates 8-in/8-out AES3 and 4-in/8-out Dante digital audio transport. The LM 44 benefits from the latest implementation of Lake's iconic 'Mesa EQ' configuration, utilising 4 Mesa modules, each with an independent input mixer and output signal processing chain.
With this configuration, the LM 44 is ideally suited for a wider number of different FOH applications, including as a mix-matrix and full system EQ - sitting between a mixer and virtually any high-end performance loudspeaker system - switching between consoles on large events, inserted EQ for monitor systems, FOH to stage digital transmission, line driver for self-powered systems, and as a Dante break-in/break-out box.
With its flexible 4 × 4 input configuration, one or more LM 44 units can replace the now-discontinued Dolby Lake Processor in most applications. It also offers a cost-effective, scalable alternative to other larger and more expensive processors in situations when only a 4 x 4 analog I/O configuration (or multiples of this) is required.
Additionally, LM 44 can be operated in Contour mode configuration (two contour modules) allowing for utilisation as a loudspeaker crossover processor, much like the intended operation of LM 26. Inputs that are not routed to the processing modules (in each mode) may be passed through to the output router. As with the LM 26, all three signal types - Dante, AES and analog - are maintained simultaneously, with user-prioritised automatic failover and dual redundancy, eliminating single point of failure.
The LM 44 integrates fully into all existing Lake system inventories, including PLM Series and LM 26, as well as with Dolby Lake Processors and all other legacy Lake devices - all controlled together via Lake Controller software, providing unrivalled flexibility and ease of use for existing Lake users.
Key LM 44 Features Include:
• 1U chassis
• Universal power supply with lockable IEC
• Mesa Mode or Contour Mode operation
• 4-in / 4-out analog with Iso-Float™ ground isolation on inputs
• Raised Cosine Equalization™
• Linear phase and Classic crossovers

Midas expands PRO range with new PRO2 and PRO2C

Midas has unveiled the latest additions to its PRO Series of digital consoles, the Midas PRO2 and PRO2C live audio systems, at PLASA 2011. The PRO2/PRO2C takes the audio quality, performance and values of the top-end Midas XL8, and makes them available at a price point well below the general-purpose mixing console average, states the company.
Despite being the smallest and least expensive Midas digital consoles, the PRO2 and PRO2C represent a quantum leap forward for digital mixing, both in technology and concept. Essentially the same console, the PRO2C has eight fewer input faders and the smaller frame, at just 750mm by 850mm. Both consoles share the same high quality components and finish as the rest of the PRO Series, including the Alex Cooper-designed mic preamps, A-D converters, and daylight-viewable screens. This offers a reassuring continuity and provides extreme functionality and sound quality in a vastly reduced footprint.
The PRO2 features three modes of channel navigation: FOH Normal, MON Normal and Advanced, allowing engineers to easily and efficiently mix a large number of inputs on a very compact control surface. Putting a PRO2/ PRO2C into Advanced navigation mode enables one of its greatest innovations: MCA (Master Control Association) groups. These operate in a similar way to the established VCA (Variable Control Association) groups, but are specific to the selected bus. When the PRO2/PRO2C is in Advanced navigation mode with MCA navigation engaged, the MCA faders control the contributions of their members only to the currently selected bus. When combined with the 'hide unassigned channels' feature, this is a unique and powerful mixing tool, which, says Midas, places the PRO2/PRO2C in a league of its own for innovation and usability.
As the PRO2s/PRO2Cs can be operated in a number of different ways, they come loaded with console templates to allow progressive exploration of the new navigation concepts. In Normal mode, operation of the PRO2/PRO2C is similar to many other digital consoles, allowing operators to work as they are accustomed to. The Advanced navigation features can be implemented as the operator becomes familiar with the console. All Midas digital console showfiles are compatible with all Midas digital consoles, allowing a show written on a PR02/PRO2C to run on a PR03, PRO6, PRO9, XL8 and vice versa.
PRO2/PRO2C features are headlined by 56 mic/line inputs with Midas mic preamps; 64 input channels; 32 analogue outputs (including 2 stereo local monitor outputs); 2 AES3 outputs; 2 AES3 inputs; 27 sample-synchronous, phase-coherent buses; 6 stereo FX engines; up to 28 Klark Teknik DN370 31-band Graphic EQs; 8 VCA (Variable Control Association) groups; 6 POPulation groups; 192 MCA (Master Control Association) groups; 48 x 16 x 100m digital snake included.
The Midas PRO2/PRO2C standard system consists of a control surface and one 5U DL251 19" rack I/O unit, connected by a networked audio and data system. The network carries both proprietary control data and open architecture AES50 digital audio, and uses standard CAT-5E or CAT-6 cabling and connectors. PR02/PR02C is network-compatible with all other Midas digital systems and I/O devices.

Ohm shows BootiQue all-in-one BGM system

Describing it as 'the ultimate background music tool", Ohm is showing its BootiQue all in one background music system at PLASA 2011.
The BootiQue sub, says Ohm, holds all the tricks, providing an arsenal of inputs including RCA (Phono), iPod (line in jack) and a USB port. More than one BootiQue system can be linked together, creating zones using the RCA link. The onboard three-channel amplifier powers the 10" bass driver and all eight satellites, making this system a true all in one solution.
Worried about fire regulations? A fire alarm mute connector ensures compliance with regulations for peace of mind. Independent controls are provided for master, bass and mid high volume parameters, enabling the right balance of sound to be achieved throughout a venue. The rear control panel includes essential functions such as ground lift, polarity reverse, input gain, sub/sat EQ and auto power off switch. This setting will turn the entire system off if no audio is detected. The venue can be closed up for the day and the audio player stopped in standby mode. On reopening and connecting the audio player, the system will turn itself back on again. For added safety, a convenient off switch is provided on the remote faceplate, which can be located anywhere in a room.
To add more versatility to the package, the remote face plate (connected to the sub via CAT-5) can be placed anywhere in the venue, combining all inputs on the rear of the subwoofer to the chosen location. Control of the system is enhanced by the remote control which boasts an array of functions such as play, pause, track toggle, EQ selection from six presets, input selector, volume and on/off control. The IR sensor on the face plate allows seamless coverage for the remote control within the given zone.
The BootiQue system is completed by up to eight high gloss piano black or white satellite speakers, small 140 mm cubes, making them both discrete and stylish. This number of satellite speakers ensures even coverage every corner of a venue with high quality sound. The system has been designed to compliment the most sophisticated of interiors and, as its name suggests, it is ideal for distributed sound in boutiques, bars, lounge areas, foyers and home cinema.

Lab.gruppen breaks new ground with energy-efficient E Series.

UK - Leading pro-audio brand Lab.gruppen is delighted to announce the launch of an innovative 1U power amplifier range developed specifically for the installation market.
Lab.gruppen's compact and ultra-efficient E Series of power amplifiers offers traditional Lab.gruppen performance to a market highly concerned with spiralling global energy prices and environmental pressures.
The E Series provides ample power reserves with amazingly low power consumption, therefore reducing the total cost of ownership below that of conventional designs. E Series utilizes much of the unique design philosophy and energy-efficient concepts debuted in the Swedish company's flagship PLM 20000Q touring amplifier, but here deployed in a 1U, install-centric platform.
The new range draws on over three decades of tour-honed design and manufacturing expertise to deliver a unique combination of performance, rock-solid reliability and energy-efficiency. Nevertheless, pricing will be highly competitive.
The E Series comprises three two-channel power amplifiers, all incorporating Lab.gruppen's IDEEA (IntelliDrive Energy Efficient Amplifier) technologies. All are housed in 1U cabinets, weigh less than 5 kg (11 pounds), and feature universal power supplies for operation anywhere in the world.
Nominal output power ratings per channel (@ 4 ohms or 70 V) are 600 W, 400 W, and 200 W for, respectively, the E 12:2, E 8:2, and E 4:2. However, significantly higher per-channel outputs are possible with asymmetrical loading and proper setting of Lab.gruppen's proprietary Rail Sensing Limiter (RSL).
Certified as Energy Star 2.1 compliant, E Series power amplifiers are extraordinarily efficient both in terms of net operating efficiency and typical current draw. In this respect, the power-to-current-draw ratio for burst signals with 1/8th average power is 400 W output for 1 A of line current at 120 V mains - a performance characteristic matched only by the PLM 20000Q. Reduced power consumption in both operational and non-operational cycles results in lower long-term cost of ownership - a key 'sellable' advantage for contractors and a tangible benefit for end-users. Control via third-party systems is enabled via GPIO, and build quality is robust in the Lab.gruppen tradition.
"E Series offers the Lab.gruppen hallmarks of reliability, performance and ease of use at a much more accessible price point for the install market," said Klas Dalbjorn, Product Research Manager for Lab.gruppen. "The energy efficient performance made possible by our new IDEEA technologies means that overall cost of ownership, including lifetime energy consumption, is considerably lower than other products aimed at this market, providing contractors with real, bottom line benefits to their customers and client base."
Heralding New Technologies
E Series incorporates a number of brand new technological developments from Lab.gruppen, including Rail Sensing Limiter (RSL), a two position switch to allow selection of either Hi-Z (100 V all models) or Lo-Z (40 V - 69.3 V model dependent) as output thresholds. The RSL switch circuit senses rail voltage and optimizes output for instantaneous load conditions. It also allows for continued operation with fluctuating mains down to below 60 V AC. RSL setting also configures outputs for asymmetric loading. As an example, this allows users to achieve optimum performance and efficiency with a small subwoofer connected to one channel and a 70 V distributed system (such as ceiling loudspeakers) to the other. Overall, this makes E Series extremely flexible for systems designers, allowing a single 1U device to fulfil multiple roles in a system, whereas with conventional amplifiers separate units would be required.
A High Headroom Universal Power Supply allows for a higher storage capacity, thus preventing excessive draw on the mains inlet during repeated peak bursts and maintaining extra headroom on the rails for longer sustained maximum power output.
The Patented Class D Output Stage is inherently bridged using proprietary topology, allowing up to double rated output on one channel when no load is connected to the other channel.
E Series is Energy Star 2.1 compliant, the first 'professional-grade' amplifier capable of these output levels to be so certified. This is an important advantage for installations where energy efficiency standards are critical, such as government and local authority tenders. Each model features an automatic power scheme, which means it turns on with signal present and goes into standby mode automatically after 20 minutes of no signal. GPIO facilitates power on/off state via third-party control systems.
Key E Series Features include:
• 1U cabinet for high power- and channel-density
• Each channel can be individually set for either lo-Z (2-16 ohm) or hi-Z (70 V distributed) systems
• Asymmetric loading allows "mixing and matching" of loads with different impedances to maximize both overall system efficiency and inventory utilization
• Single temperature-controlled fan for efficient cooling
• Comprehensive circuit protection and fault indication
• Inputs and outputs on detachable Phoenix-type screw terminals
• 35 Hz high-pass filter, switchable per channel
E Series will be launched at PLASA London, this September.

Are we facing a world without wireless?
As this headline has caught your attention, chances are you're an audio professional. And the chances are also that you're aware of the fight that's been raging over the Government's decision to auction the wireless frequencies you use to the highest bidder - the so-called 'digital dividend' resulting from the UK's switchover to digital television.
What you may not know is that, despite a widely-publicised compensation package (the 800MHz Funding Scheme) for wireless equipment owners, the way audio pros, broadcasters and others work with wireless equipment remains under severe threat.
So much so that the nightmare scenario, that the industry might be forced to relinquish wireless technology entirely and return to a cabled world, is not as far-fetched as it might seem.
Alan March is a member of the Steering Committee of BEIRG (British Entertainment Industry Radio Group), the voluntary trade body set up to lead the fight for the industry's wireless future.
He told PLASA: "The bottom line is that this fight has been going on for some time now, and people see the compensation scheme that's been created - but our point is that it's far from being the end of the story.
"All of the systems we use, or expect to be using, depend on the availability of spectrum, and we're seeing a slow reduction, or pollution, of many of the frequencies we've taken for granted.
"There's still a lack of understanding among people who make policies and an assumption that because we've won a compensation package everything's rosy. But £65m is a drop in the ocean for the Government and we must get a handle on the bigger picture, and the industry needs to wake up and put its hands in its pocket for more lobbying to gain more political influence."
Another key issue, he adds, is the threat potentially posed by the new 'White Space' wireless technology currently under development, and the danger that, in future, audience members could be using White Space devices that may wreak havoc with a show.
With OFCOM in favour of the technology, warns March, "We can't just sit here like King Canute. We need to discuss how we should all go forward by coming together as an industry - individuals and companies both large and small - and how we need to fight our in corner in a worrying situation. In short, we need to understand the situation that we're in, get more people to join BEIRG - and fight for our future.
"Otherwise we could have no wireless at all - and you don't have to think too hard to see the compromises that would mean to our current stunning production standards. We're used to a fairly controlled environment and these things will threaten that dramatically."
In a seminar presented by BEIRG from 3.30-4.30pm on Sunday 11 September at PLASA 2011, these issues and more will be aired and discussed in depth.
Adds March: "We want to show people how we've got to where we are, discuss the move to a more market-based approach to spectrum management, and the apparent threats as more frequencies are taken up by, for example, wireless broadband and high bandwidth cellular telephony."
The session will likely be an eye opener to those in the industry who have yet to fully appreciate the potential danger to the 'PMSE' (Programme Makers and Special Events) sector by the digital frequency sell-off.
Seats can be booked at www.plasashow.com/education/sunday - admission is free.

Cadac to unveil flagship desk

Marking the British console company's third completely new console design in a year, Cadac Holdings is launching its new flagship digital live production console, the CDC Eight, at PLASA 2011.
Specified for high end sound touring and fixed installation applications, the circa £45K console boasts a "high agility" user interface, accessed via two 24 inch 16:10 high definition LCD touch screens; a further centre located 6-inch LCD touch screen accesses the system control and automation. Combined with a far less menu dependent operating system than other digital consoles, the CDC Eight is promoted as "exceptionally smart, nimble and intuitive in operation".
The CDC Eight features a high I/O count for a desk at this price point, offering 128 input channels - expandable to 256 - and a standard 48 outputs. Two frame sizes offer 16 or 32 faders. Built upon the company's latest generation proprietary DSP mix platform, processing power - as the name implies - is delivered by eight 32/40-bit floating-point SHARC processors.
A wide dynamic range, low noise mic pre-amp, specially developed ultra-low distortion EQ filters and analogue emulating compressor algorithms, 24-bit / 96kHz Delta-Sigma AD/DA converters, and advanced EQ algorithms, using proportional-Q techniques, combine "to deliver a classic 'Cadac sound' signal chain, that sonically outperforms consoles several times the price".
To be unveiled at a media launch event on the Cadac stand (1H 6), at 1pm on the opening day of the show, the CDC Eight is billed as "Cadac's killer sound touring console," by sales development manager Vincenzo Borrelli. "What really sets it apart - aside from the classic CADAC sound quality - is the user interface, which is truly of its time and totally intuitive to any audio engineer."
Simultaneously, Cadac is branding its digital product range with the common CDC prefix; thus, the DM1600, launched at Prolight+Sound this year, is renamed the CDC Four. The 'small format' digital production console shares the same proprietary DSP genealogy, and many of the same signal chain features, as its larger CDC Eight sibling.

Outline adds to the GTO family

Outline's large-format line-source system will make its UK début at PLASA 2011. The result of a two-year cooperation between Outline and some of the world's best-known rental companies, GTO (Grand Touring Outline) has already had a highly successful start. The first systems that left the factory (summer 2010) were already sold and earmarked for immediate use on high-profile concerts and tours, initially in the USA and then Europe. Those systems, says the company, were not prototypes but standard production models.
Outline adds that currently, thanks to the evolution of a market in which loudspeakers are increasingly sturdy and efficient, "there is no doubt that almost all PAs effectively sound loud". This, says Outline, has led to exaggerated use of expressions such as 'incredible output power' by audio manufacturers - "expressions that in many cases are backed up by facts".
The company contends, however, that GTO's particular ability is to ensure intelligible output over long distances, "higher than any competitor in the market's large-format PA sector", an advantage it ascribes to Outline's D.P.R.W.G. waveguide.
However, the GTO family continues to grow. At PLASA 2011 the Italian company will unveil its GTO-DF (Down-fill). This element is mechanically compatible with GTO and conceived and designed with a sole aim: providing audio coverage for the first rows of the audience in every type of event at which GTO systems are used.
From the design point of view, the GTO-DF is eye-catching, with its aperture (120°) gradually flaring out downwards. As opposed to the GTO, which has ten loudspeakers, this element uses six: four 8-inch mid-woofers and two 3-inch compression drivers.
Outline is also active on the software front. At PLASA 2011, Outline will present an Apple iPad app - written entirely in-house - which provides control over Outline's self-powered loudspeaker enclosures. (http://itunes.apple.com/uk/app/mini-com-p-a-s-s-linearray/id435900890?mt=8).
Following in-depth research carried out in collaboration with the University of Brescia, Outline believes that "man/loudspeaker enclosure interaction can be revolutionized with software interfaces on tablet computers...therefore, no more hardware interfaces with displays, pots and buttons, but a channel to communicate with the dynamic outside world of IT. This app is not intended to be a 'marketing accessory', but an enjoyable, efficient and precise tool for the rapid easy control of Outline's self-powered systems. In short, the systems' all-round remote controller."
The app is a native iOS APP, not a Web link, and gives all-round control of, for example, the Mini-COM.P.A.S.S. systems - including the complex group management that a line-array with adjustable horizontal dispersion implies - and the brand-new iSM series of stage monitors.

Ohrwurm Showtechnik unveils In Ear 1

With the promise that "now you can just use your guitar cable for your in-ear signals", Ohrwurm Showtechnik is launching its IN Ear 1 system at PLASA 2011.
The system consists of a 19" main station and a beltpack with a headphone amplifier. The two devices are connected with a high flexible CAT6 cable and the complete transfer of the guitar signal to the amplifier and the stereo monitor signal to the belt pack is done with this cable.
The power supply of the beltpack comes from the main station, meaning that batteries are not required. The company says that "all known problems of wireless systems are now a thing of the past".
Two stereo channels are mixed in two separate channels at the Main Station. Channel 1 is an input for microphone levels and Channel 2 is a stereo input for line levels from the monitor desk. The second channel can be switched to mono if there is no need for a stereo signal. The connectors for the guitar amp and the three-input XLR are on the rear as well, in order to keep the front clear of cables.
Claimed advantages of the In Ear 1 system include the fact that only one cable is required for the guitar signal and the stereo in-ear signal; no batteries are required in the beltpack, "helping to reduce garbage compared to other systems; a high quality headphone amplifier provides better dynamic compared to wireless solutions; no high frequency losses due to long guitar cables; no hum noise on the guitar cable due to balanced signal transmission; no interference from other wireless systems, no frequency overlap or cancellations; and a 'future proof' design that means occupied frequency areas have become irrelevant.

Renkus-Heinz will show its latest products at PLASA 2011 on the POLARaudio stand (1-F2) - and visitors will have an opportunity to hear the "ground-breaking" IC Live digital beam steering system live in the Technologies for Worship Pavilion, where the system will be in use for lectures throughout the day.
Heading the list on the stand is the unique IC2 (IC Squared) - the first ever high powered, medium format digitally steerable loudspeaker system. Designed for theatre and club installations and integrating digital beam steering with high power output, built in amplification and RHAON network control, it opens up, says Renkus-Heinz, "a totally new product sector in pro audio, for venues looking for the ultimate in quality and control".
IC² is designed to set a new benchmark in live sound loudspeaker design by combining the control and flexibility of Iconyx digitally steerable technology with the power and focus of a point source loudspeaker, creating the world's first 'hybrid array' with the full benefits of both technologies.
Each IC² two-way 8-inch module delivers "articulate musicality and powerful punch", with a versatile design that can be used as a stand-alone high-performance loudspeaker, a small ground stack or a flown array of up to 20 cabinets.
The new CF101-LA Modular Point Source Array, which will be flown on the stand, offers a breakthrough solution for today's small and mid-sized venues, including auditoria, night clubs, theaters and houses of worship.
The self-powered CF101-LA delivers the performance and pattern control of a line array, with the clarity of a point source system, in a compact, affordable design equally at home on the road or in a permanent installation. With the flexibility to be flown, ground-stacked or pole-mounted, up to four CF101-LA cabinets can be arrayed to provide a 90x60 degree coverage pattern, delivering up to 9 dB more output and tighter vertical pattern control than a conventional single cabinet, according to Renkus-Heinz. A non-powered version, CFX101-LA, is also available.
A full dual IC Live digital beam steering system with matching IC215S-R subwoofers, and a single cutaway IC2, give visitors a chance to see this special technology. The display will be completed by a single IC16R digitally beam steered installation loudspeaker.
Meanwhile, attendees at the Technology for Worship Pavilion lectures have the promise of hearing the presenters in crystal clarity via an IC Live system with an IC Live and matching subwoofer on either side of the stage.

Yamaha updates StageMix app and débuts new VS install speakers
Yamaha Commercial Audio Europe comes to PLASA2011 on the back of what it calls "the company's most successful ever festival season" and is showing three products which are making their European trade show debuts.
Summer 2011 has seen the highest ever number of Yamaha PM5D digital mixing consoles at work in a single summer season, which the company says is now regarded as 'the standard' for outdoor monitor systems. Yamaha consoles have been in use at the majority of Europe's biggest festivals, while the continuing expansion of the market has seen the M7CL and LS9 become mainstays of an ever-growing variety of outdoor shows.
Exhibiting on Stand 1-G31, PLASA 2011 sees Yamaha showing three new products which continue to broaden the company's ranges and add value and functionality to existing systems.
Nearly 50,000 copies of the original StageMix iPad app have been downloaded since its launch at PLASA last year. Now StageMix 2.0 gives users of M7CL and LS9 even greater levels of wireless control. The new version adds Head Amp gain control for each input channel, Scene Memory management (including Store, Recall, Scene Titles and Comments) and other refinements. StageMix 2.0 is free to download from Apple's iTunes store and is available now.
The VS series of installation loudspeakers will be available from early autumn in two models - the VS4 andVS6 - in black or white. Both feature a sleek, functional design with weatherproof enclosure.
Aimed principally at the corporate market, the MY4-AEC Echo Canceller card offers high definition sound for audio and video conferencing with Yamaha's DME series of digital mixing engines. With the introduction of high definition video to conferencing systems, Yamaha DME systems are becoming increasingly popular as a means of delivering audio quality at a comparable level.
The MY4-AEC features four channels of adaptive echo cancelling (AEC), which automatically calculate the best settings according to the environment and the equipment being used. It is also equipped with a powerful noise reduction algorithm and four channels of AES/EBU I/O to facilitate the use of other digital audio equipment.
Nick Cook, European marketing director, Yamaha Commercial Audio, looks forward to PLASA 2011, saying, "Interest from rental companies in our digital consoles this summer has been phenomenal because they continue to be a reliable long-term investment. In the past year we have also sold more LS9s than ever before. Although there is no doubt that the pro-audio market is tough, we currently have a good forward-order book, which is proof that our strategy of not 'reinventing the wheel', purely for the sake of doing so, is a sound one.
"Ensuring that Yamaha users get the most from our systems is a priority, so we are committed to our amplifier and loudspeaker ranges, alongside products like StageMix and our ever-growing series of expansion cards.
"We look forward to meeting people on the stand at PLASA and demonstrating that our latest products are more key elements to providing optimum-quality audio in a wide variety of situations."
Show visitors are also invited to visit the Yamaha stand to learn about a very special competition...

New Bose solution launches at PLASA 2011

Promising "concert-quality sound with breakthrough scalability and configurability", Bose will host the official UK launch of the new Bose RoomMatch series of progressive directivity array loudspeakers and the PowerMatch PM8500 & PM8500N configurable professional power amplifiers at PLASA 2011.
Introduced to the wide acclaim of consultants and dealers in Istanbul earlier this year, these products provide sound designers with "unprecedented scalability and configurability" for venues including arenas, performing arts centres, live music venues and houses of worship. They enable concert-quality sound to be delivered more consistently and efficiently, regardless of room size, shape, or acoustic properties.
Also on show at PLASA 2011 will be updated Bose Modeler software including features for designing systems with RoomMatch array modules, and new Bose ControlSpace Designer software providing setup, control and monitor functions for the PowerMatch amplifier, while allowing it to be integrated into ControlSpace networks.
"Our engineers challenged conventional wisdom for both loudspeaker and amplifier design," said Akira Mochimaru, general manager, Bose Professional Systems Division. "The result is a new approach for the industry, one that lets sound designers and integrators meet the acoustic challenges of any fixed-installation sound system with more flexibility and far less compromise to audio performance."
RoomMatch™ modules, says the company, overcome the acoustic performance limitations of conventional line-array and point-source loudspeakers. Available in 15 different coverage patterns, they can be used alone or with other RoomMatch array modules to form Progressive Directivity Arrays - a new category of curvilinear array from Bose. They perform as a single loudspeaker to ensure optimal sound coverage for a particular listening area.
Bose RoomMatch waveguide technology directs sound more precisely, reducing unwanted wall and ceiling reflections that can degrade tonal balance. Multiple, readily available waveguide patterns allow for customized sound coverage for virtually any room.
Each loudspeaker features two new 10-inch (25.4 cm) woofers and six extended mid-range compression drivers. Together, they eliminate the need for the mid/high crossover, resulting in improved vocal clarity and intelligibility. To reduce distortion, the woofer uses a proprietary ultra-linear motor, a tapered port, and an individual acoustic enclosure, while the compression drivers have a proprietary Bridge Phase Plug to remove resonant modes, without the use of FIR filters or complex signal processing.
Sound designers can scale Sound Pressure Level (SPL) by creating a Bose Progressive Directivity Array to achieve a seamless, consistent response over nearly any vertical angle. This is accomplished with a Continuous-Arc Diffraction-Slot (CADS) manifold - a Bose invention and an industry first - that provides interference-free acoustic summation of six compression drivers, and the ability to define precise vertical coverage between 0 and 60 degrees for each RoomMatch module.
For bass augmentation below 80 Hz, the new RoomMatch RMS215 subwoofer array module is tuned to complement RoomMatch full-range loudspeakers.
Driving the new system is the PowerMatch 8500 Configurable Professional Power Amplifier. Designed to work with both RoomMatch array modules and other professional loudspeakers, its 4000W rated power can be allocated to between two and eight channels. It provides an unprecedented combination of audio performance and flexible output - all from a standard thee pin wall outlet.
A dual feedback loop architecture continuously monitors and controls the current and voltage to help prevent circuits from being overdrawn. It also combines the sound quality and reliability of the best Class-AB designs with Class-D efficiency.
The Bose PeakBank power supply incorporates proprietary regenerative four-quadrant design with fast-tracking Power Factor Correction (PFC). It offers higher power and higher efficiency over standard PFC, and improves peak bursts for superior transient response and low-frequency performance. Bass transient response is further enhanced with Bose switching technology that delivers high levels of continuous output for longer durations.
Most sound system applications require several output power levels, involving different amplifier types. Through new QuadBridge technology, the PowerMatch amplifier provides a level of flexibility only available from Bose. It's configurable in single, bridge, or QuadBridge modes, and maintains consistent tonal balance regardless of the output level. Configurations are selected via software and include 8x500W, 4x1000W, 2x2000W, or mixed combinations. Bridge or QuadBridge modes can drive either low-impedance or 70V/100V loads.
Completing the new system is the Installation and Integrated Rigging Structure, allowing RoomMatch array modules to be rigged using the handles provided, and secured with no adjustment to the array's curvature required. An integrated side-plate rigging structure eliminates the need for custom rigging, reducing installation time and costs.
All RoomMatch and PowerMatch products, and compatible versions of Modeler and ControlSpace Designer software, will be available through authorised Bose dealers beginning September, 2011. More information: pro.Bose.com.

The new handsets can supply up to 200mW with a 400m maximum range and offer a range of enhancements including push to talk mode, adjustable side tone, fast channel change facility, selectable mic filter and a PIN-lockable feature that locks-off pages in the Advanced menu. < more >
The RTS BTR-240 system operates in the licence-free 2.4GHz frequency band and delivers full duplex operation for up to eight beltpacks with "an almost unlimited number" of half-duplex beltpacks. The system offers two separate audio channels, allowing users to communicate on either or both channels in either talk-and-listen and listen-only modes. The BTR-240 wireless intercom system is suitable for stand-alone operation or can be directly interfaced to wired systems including RTS, Tecpro and Clearcom.
Also new to PLASA 2011 are Canford's 'tour grade' Cat-5 breakout boxes with 4- or 8-way Cat-5 connectivity and Cat-5 multicore cables in 4- or 8-way versions, along with new fibre optic breakout boxes. Both types are intended, say Canford, for "applications where a tough, resilient solution is required". The multicore Ethernet cables employ Canford's reduced size CAT5E-F-M, designed specifically for installations where a high quality but very flexible screened Category 5E cable is required. Core construction and jacket material are identical to CAT5E-F; the difference is the jacket thickness. The individual cables are collected within a tough outer sleeve and each cable is individually numbered to aid termination.
The new EMO E810 LED racklight will also make its PLASA Show début. The new unit differs, says Canford, from competitors in several crucial ways, including the fact that it interfaces with Tecpro and RTS comms systems to indicate when a call is inbound. A flush unit with no protruding catches or latches, it employs push to open and 'click shut' sliding rails, automatically switching off the light when closed and switching it on again when opened. Sliding rails enable the unit to be withdrawn to precisely the right point to illuminate all or just a few of the rack-mounted devices below.
The D'n'A (Digital and Analogue) cable range, launched at PLASA 2010, will be on show too, redesigned to provide a true 100Ω impedance, an optimal impedance for AES/EBU digital audio signals as well as analogue microphone and line level signals. Many of the cables come in Low Fire Hazard (LFH) versions.

EAW to unveil new MicroWedge models

EAW will be showing its new additions to the MicroWedge series of stage monitors at PLASA 2011. The MicroWedge8 (MW8) and MicroWedge10 (MW10) are a small-format continuation of the MW line. Although even smaller than the compact MW12 and MW15, EAW says the MW8 and MW10 offer volume levels and voicing that rival full-size industry-standard 12-inch and 15-inch monitors.
The MW8 and MW10 are suitable for mid-to-high-volume rock/alternative performers, houses of worship, theatres, edge of stage-fills, corporate shows/events and presenters. They are also designed for front-of-house or monitor engineers looking for a live monitoring option on the console meter bridge.
The MW8 is the smallest in the MW line of products, featuring an 8-inch woofer, while the MW10 features a 10-inch woofer. Both units' coaxial designs pair the respective woofers with a 3-in (diaphragm) coaxially-mounted HF compression driver, providing full yet controlled 90-degree horizontal dispersion.
Dave Rat, owner of Rat Sound, and co-developer of the MicroWedge Series with EAW, comments: "The design philosophy of the MicroWedge Series is to be able to exceed the competition in loudness with feedback stability, clarity and maximum volume. The MicroWedge12 can match or beat just about any other 15-inch-based wedges on the market in feedback stability and even low-frequency output, and the MicroWedge15 pushes things up another whole level."
Jeff Rocha, EAW senior director of engineering, adds: "Our new MicroWedge 8 and 10 are a direct result of feedback from our key end users in the market. We wanted to create smaller versions of our MW12 and MW15 with the same voicing and relative power, without sacrificing any of the performance features that make those larger boxes so successful."

Neutrik unveils NP2XL and NP2RX-TIMBRE

Neutrik is to launch two new products at PLASA 2011 - the NP2XL jumboPLUG and NP2RX-Timbre.
The company has extended its jack plug range to include a large 1/4'' Jumbo plug, the NP2XL, which features a turned one-piece tip connection as used in all Neutrik plugs to eliminate any possibility of noise found with riveted connections.
Designed for thick professional instrument cables up to 10mm wide, it features an ergonomic barrel and incorporates the features and benefits of the standard PX range, which include a robust, diecast shell, a proven chuck-type strain relief for reliable cable retention, ergonomic design for handling convenience and precision machined one-piece contacts.
Hailing the concept 'as brilliant as it is simple', Neutrik's new NP2RX-Timbre jack plug allows a guitarist to change the timbre of a guitar sound from neutral, clear sound to warm characteristics in four steps by turning a knob on the plug.
The design, says Neutrik, exploits the fact that the characteristic sound of a guitar is influenced to a certain extent by the instrument cable, in particular the natural electrical property of guitar cables.
