From Student to Spotlight: Do You Need a Degree to Design?

While most people at the PLASA Show would probably agree that doing a degree in Lighting Design does not make you a lighting designer, many of the current high-profile theatre LDs did just that.

Given that the average UK undergraduate student graduates with a £53,000 debt, what exactly does a lighting student get for that?  What is missing?  What can we as an industry do to help graduates sustain themselves till they get to a point when they can call themselves a professional LD? Are there more effective or just alternative ways to gain entry-level skills of lighting design?

The Association for Lighting Production and Design has invited some of our professional LD members to discuss the pros and cons of degree education, to talk about how they got from recent graduate to award nominee, and perhaps propose some new ways of thinking about how we prepare the next generation of LDs for professional practice.

Who is this session for?

This seminar is for aspiring and practicing LDs, and anyone who works with them.
