What Does Responsible Touring Look Like Today?

Touring can place considerable demands on the people who make live performance possible. Long hours, disrupted sleep, ongoing pressure, unforeseen challenges, separation from home and the difficulty of switching off are familiar elements of life on the road. But should individuals simply be expected to absorb those pressures, or should preparation, support and recovery be considered part of responsible touring practice?

Bringing together perspectives from tour management, occupational health and the wider live industry, this session asks what responsible touring looks like in practice. Where does individual responsibility end and organisational responsibility begin? What can be done before a tour leaves to help people stay well? How can leaders respond when someone is struggling, without becoming pseudo-therapists themselves? And what role can the wider industry play in making good practice and appropriate support accessible beyond the industry's biggest tours?

The panel will share practical experience, emerging good practice and some of the thinking behind MITC's new Pay It Forward Fund, which will help smaller touring teams to access specialist health and welfare support.
