Virtual Pre-Production - The Royal Ballet And Opera’s 3D World
An insight into the virtual pre-production work at the Royal Ballet and Opera.
The virtual replica of the Royal Opera House and realistic 3D computer models of the productions are used to work on new shows and for relighting our existing repertoire. Discover the workflow used to create 3D environments for opera and ballet, showcasing how visualisation fits within the overall pre-production process.
The session will show demos of animated “virtual technical rehearsals” of some of the productions we worked on during our 2025/2026 season, as well as CGI breakdowns of how a production’s 3D environments is built. From visualising sets and lighting to human scales in costume, complex organic modelling of props, special effects such as snow and glitter drops and a comprehensive amalgamation of different production departments, opening the door to the future of a holistic approach to visualisation and virtual pre-production for live performance.
Who is this session for?
People working in theatre and live performance within lighting, production management and technical teams, as well as students and apprentices within all theatre disciplines will all be interested in this session.
This seminar is free to attend with a show entry badge. Seminars operate on a walk-in basis, so be sure to arrive in good time as seats are first-come-first-served.
