Paul Johnson
Historic Stage Lighting Collective (HSLC)
Paul has been involved with theatre lighting since his first brush with professional theatre in the 70's. He then spent a few years working with the very different amateur theatre. From 1984, things expanded with what would now be called 'Light Entertainment' and a gradual shift to all things with plugs on - so lights, sound, set, scenery and later video. In the 90's he qualified as a teacher and started working in colleges. By the 2000's he was Principal Examiner for Music Technology A Level, and a writer for BTEC - spending 15 years writing, assessing and verifiying BTec 1st, Nationals and Highers. The past 20 years found him moving to Production and Company Management for QDOS and Crossroads Pantomimes, as well as being Technical Manager for summer seasons every year on the end of a pier! He has known Jim Laws for most of this time, and joined HSLC with the aim of making certain
the equipment used in theatre would be preserved for the benefit of future generations of lighting enthusiasts. Unusually, he does not have rose tinted glasses, but a practical and down to earth approach to heritage collections.
